Physiology Friday #271: Is Durability the Most Underrated Trait in Endurance Performance?

Physiologically Speaking

Greetings! Welcome to the Physiology Friday newsletter. This week I want to shoutout my new favorite protein bar— BOLD Bar. Founded by Sean Jagermann, BOLD BAR launched in April 2025 to redefine on-the-go fuel. Each bar packs 20g of protein and 100mg of caffeine, and is sweetened only with honey, for a clean, simple, and satiating snack. BOLD is the only bar on the market built on these three uncompromising pillars: high protein, a real caffeine boost, and natural sweetness with zero artif

Updated evidence on selection and implementation of an invasive treatment strategy for older patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction

Heart BMJ

Non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) is the most common acute coronary syndrome diagnosis in older patients. In the UK, there are ~20 000 NSTEMI cases annually in patients aged ≥75 years. Despite therapeutic advances in pharmacological and invasive management, studies show that older patients with NSTEMI experience worse in-hospital and long-term outcomes than younger patients, suggesting a clear need for robust evidence in this cohort.

'Barcodes' written into our DNA reveal how blood ages

Science Daily - Stroke

A study explains how age reshapes the blood system. In both humans and mice, a few stem cells out-compete their neighbors and gradually take over blood production. The loss of diversity results in a blood system that has a preference for producing myeloid cells, immune cells linked to chronic inflammation which underlies many different diseases. Using a new technique, researchers tracked naturally-occurring 'barcodes' in blood cells which can lead to new strategies that spot early warning signs
